College Life

Mannix College strives to complement university life not only academically but also socially. Every year the student body elect a group of 12 students who form the Mannix College Student Society – a Monash University club that promotes student involvement in social activities such as weekly functions, music, drama and sport, not only at the university but within the College itself. Additionally, the Society encourages and supports the students from all year levels to initiate their own social activities and competitions within the College.

A major event on the Student Society calender is the ‘Annual Ball' held early in the year. Lead by the Society's Ball Representative, an additional 3 students from the College body form the ‘Ball Committee' and organise and market the event at Monash University, Melbourne University and their respective residential colleges.

The Society also organises a number of other formal events such as the Annual Dinner in September where all students and staff from the College celebrate the achievements of the College at an outside reception venue.

Weekly functions on a Thursday night are organised by the Committee often with a theme. These provide perfect opportunities for students to mingle at the end of the week in the comfort of our Junior Common Room. The committee also organises trivia nights, city tours and cruises along the Yarra.

On a musical note, the Society works in conjunction with the Mannix College St. Vincent de Paul group to organise the ‘Musical Extravaganza' - a concert with student performers raising money for a charity of choice. Additionally, the College has a string quartet and other ensembles that regularly perform at formal dinners and special events.

An important aspect of College life is sport – within Mannix and against other residences at Monash and Melbourne University . Sports played include football, netball, basketball, tennis, and volleyball. East versus West Girls and Boys football match is a major highlight on the sports calender. At the end of the year, the leading Mannix College sportsman and sportswoman award is handed to the those people who have contributed immensely in the development of sport throughout the year and for their participation and excellence in sport.

There are many other opportunities for student to participate in groups, such as the St. Vincent de Paul group, who aim to make an impact in local and distant communities by fundraising and volunteering outside Mannix, and the Environment Group who aim to increase awareness of environmental issues in the College itself.
